The Importance of The Upcoming General Election

During the 2009 legislative session HB 2084, also known as the Texas Parental Rights Texas Parental Rights Restoration Act Restoration Act, received a lot of attention from our office and the home school community. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, this bill did not pass due in part to the loss of friends in the Texas legislature during the previous election, which limited our impact on the legislature and put our freedoms at risk when we narrowly defeated daytime curfew bills and had to ask Governor Perry to veto another bad bill.

Elections have serious consequences, and this could be one of the most important elections in recent history! Because this election will have a direct impact on home school families next year in the Texas Legislature and the U.S. Congress, we are endorsing candidates who sincerely believe it is the fundamental right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children.

Another front in the battle to defend parental rights lies in judicial elections. We must elect judges who will correctly interpret the law and will not attempt to replace the law with their opinion. We need judges who support the fundamental right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children–judges who will require CPS to follow the law and will not allow this agency to infringe upon the rights of parents–judges who will give proper weight to parental rights when hearing cases involving grandparents seeking access or possession of their grandchildren simply because they [the grandparents] do not agree with the choices of the parent(s). Therefore, THSC PAC is also endorsing state and local judges whom we believe meet this strict criterion.

But we need you in order to make this election cycle successful election cycle successful. Please vote and encourage others to vote! Parental rights and freedoms hang in the balance, and the choice is up to you! As Edmund Burk once said, “No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”

The list of general election endorsements will be updated regularly. We do not necessarily endorse in every race, but please note that this is not a final list of endorsements; other races are still being considered. We endorsed legislators and statewide candidates who were sponsors or co-sponsors of the Texas Parental Rights Restoration Act or those who have publicly committed to support it in the upcoming legislative session. For judges, we have endorsed those who have demonstrated a commitment to interpret the law and who support the constitutional right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children.
