Back-to-School Shopping, What a treat! NOT!

Shopping with kids is about as fun as having a bad sunburn. It’s a workout just trying to get the kids out of the car seat while holding the door of your SUV so it doesn’t dent the Mercedes parked next to you.

Seeing all the back to school signs got me to thinkin’ about the last time I hit the stores.  I was on the hunt for the perfect color dress-shirt for my husband to wear with his suit. I looked everywhere for one that would be under my twenty dollar rule so I decided to give the mall a try. Shopping with kids is about as fun as having a bad sunburn. It’s a workout just trying to get the kids out of the car seat while holding the door of your SUV so it doesn’t dent the Mercedes parked next to you.  I finally win the battle of “you have to sit in the stroller or there will be a consequence” and in we go for a quick lunch with a friend.

Drinks refilled, potty break and I make my way over to the store. I walk in and the overwhelming smell of all the fragrances mixed together has a reaction with my contacts that causes my eyes to tear up. Forget smoky eyes, I am now sporting the raccoon look.

Finally I make it to the men’s section; I look at the shirts, find just what I am looking for and head to the check out counter. While the men’s attendant finishes a customer, my child uses the opportunity to escape from the stroller.  She steps out and it flips over. I feel tea dripping all over my pants. I grab her blanket as fast as I can and begin sopping up the puddle on the floor while she hides in a clothes rack. People are staring and I am about to come unglued. The gentleman finally wraps up his sale.  With the voice of a mom I say, “Grab me a plastic shopping bag!” I put the blanket in the bag and then hide it in my purse. I get up from the floor and look down amazed at stain free carpet! I apologize and thank the man for his kindness and pay for my shirt.  However, now it’s my daughters turn.  She didn’t want to and we made another scene trying, but we stood at the counter until she braves the words “I’m sorry sir”.

This trip today wasn’t about me… it was about Him. He had a lesson to teach my baby girl this time.

Parenting is the most important, tedious, time-consuming labor a mom or dad will ever serve. It’s not always a baby magic bed of roses, but we must not give up if we truly love our children! Proverbs 22:6 says that we should train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Another school year beginning proves these days soon will pass by and our time to grow them into mature believers will too. I pray you have fun “shopping ‘till you’re dropping” and make the most of this school year by& teaching your children the most important lessons ever learned.

With Love in Him,
Tanie Ree
