COVER STORY: Sheila Walsh - A True Woman of Faith

Scottish born and raised, Sheila Walsh is familiar with an environment with limited access to church, Christian concerts, or the plethora of Christian retailers we have in America. It’s rare to be raised in a Christian home. Sheila realized at an early age what a challenge it was to get the Gospel to the lost in her country. And thus, her journey began…

Architects and engineers will be the first to tell you that the most important part of a massive building is the foundation. They know that a strong foundation is absolutely essential to the rest of the construction process. The strength, or lack of, will affect everything that will be placed on top of it.

Discovering Learning Disabilities?

When my daughter Allegra was in her second year of kindergarten, the school principal school suggested that I have her evaluated for “learning problems”. Learning problems did not sound like a particularly serious issue to me. I thought the term might indicate a problem with attention span, or maybe a short lag in reading abilities. When the principal then hinted that Allegra might have trouble in a regular classroom, my internal alarm bells began to clang – not loudly, but with a definite steady beat. “What did she mean by that?” I wondered. Rather than wallow in uncertainty, I decided to get some answers from someone who, at that time, was regarded as the top pediatric neurologist in New York City.

Dave Says: Credit Counseling Services

I have a friend with $30,000 in credit card debt, an $80,000 second mortgage, and a car loan. She makes about $70,000 a year, and is considering using a credit counseling service to help. They say they can negotiate her credit card debt down to almost half of what it is now, but there’s an 18 percent fee attached for their services. What are your feelings about this?

Chances are you may have never really thought about it. How could you with so many other body parts vying for your attention? Just this weekend alone I’ve seen infomercials on television touting products for healthy skin, hair, teeth, bones, fingernails and toenails, abdominal muscles, and colons. I learned that it’s even important to keep the calluses on the bottom of our feet properly scraped to be healthy.

Have You Found Your Spot?

The Month of March is known for many things as we look back through history and time. Everything from the "Ides of March", in the ancient world (rather frightening) to "Taxes Coming" in the modern world (still could be rather frightening). But perhaps today, March in America is most well know for "March Madness" (if you like sports)... when college basketball has its national tournament and the eyes of a nation follow a field of 64 league champion teams all the way down to the "Final Four" and the crowning of a National Champion. This sometimes reminds me of my life on the road to becoming a bonified American Senior! I am reminded of one who has been called the greatest college coach in history and now is best known for his wisdom and teaching on character. John Wooden led UCLA to 11 National Championships, a feat that will most likely never be matched. He had a system to develop his teams, player by player. At the beginning of every season, he would have his young guys take many different shots at the basket, from all over the court. As he observed them, he would write down the one best shot each player had and then script his offense around a series of plays in which each athlete would get open to "take his best shot". He called this "finding your Spot" and it carried over into the lives of the Bruin players. Their character and maturity in life was often relational to what they had learned on the court.

Great Study Skills Are The Key To Success In School

The challenge facing many school children these days is that for the most part they simply don’t have the study skills they need to succeed in the classroom. A major key to educational success is having these strong study skills. Most parents (and many teachers) don’t think to teach their children how to study and those that do aren’t quite sure where to start.

Governor Rick Perry Leads Texas by Faith

Politicians are historically the butt of many a joke. The public tends to be disenchanted by the continual waffling they see. How refreshing it is, then, to see a man who knows what he believes, and is willing to take a stand for those beliefs, no matter how unpopular. It's a very tough thing to do; something most individuals cannot do alone. Thankfully, our governor is never alone.

Social Justice and the Single

There's quite the buzz about social justice these days. Everyone has a pet cause that they support, but it's easier to talk about love than it is to show it. As Mother Teresa said, "The poor do not need our sympathy or our pity. The poor need our love and compassion."

Finally, the rush is over. It's time to breathe, to rest and recover. Time for a good night's sleep in your warm cozy bed... Until the clock clicks over once again, and we stare into the darkness, awake most of the night.

Dave Says: Balancing Ambition & Contentment

How do you balance ambition with contentment? This is a really good question! To be honest, I don't believe they require balance. You thought ambition was the opposite of contentment, didn't you? I don't look at it that way. It's not like a teeter-totter. They don't have to balance out, because they're not on the same spectrum.

A Heart for Special Needs

When their infant daughter was diagnosed with a chromosomal abnormality, Connor and Mary Bales felt the Lord leading them to a new church. Though they loved the church they'd called home for years, they wanted little Libby to be at a place that would better understand her needs.
