Brown is, by no means, your average guitar-strumming, hymn-humming worship leader. Raised in Cape Town, South Africa, he eventually made his way to London where he attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, studying political, philosophical and theological coursework. It was in London that he discovered his passion for worship music. And the songs he began writing were often born out of painful life struggles, such as "Praise Is Rising (Hosanna)" and "Everlasting God", written during Brown’s battle with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). These are two of four CCLI top 100 songs featured on the CD. The others include the familiar "Lord Reign In Me" and "All Who Are Thirsty" as well as two new additions, "Amazing God" and "Adoration", written as an expression of hope after the excruciating loss of his stillborn daughter, Gracie, and the eventual joy-filled arrival of a healthy baby girl, Bella.
Though the weight of grief was more than he could handle, Brenton turned to the One who could carry his burdens and found healing. "He (God) can bear the weight of every heavy heart. He can turn our tears into songs of praise. And I don't know how He does what He does, but it’s extraordinary. He does it for people all over the world. He carries the weight of this life and brings us through these difficulties somehow. And that’s a reason to worship with full abandon."
Like a visit from a new friend, careful not to overstay his welcome, this six-song CD feels like a warm, fireside chat that you don’t want to end. The good news is you can hit replay and keep the conversation going.
