How many times have we heard that all encompassing statement from God's heart to ours? Yes, God gave the greatest gift of all time that secured us forever in His love and plan, when we received His son as our Lord and Savior. Talk about the "gift that keeps on giving!" His peace, joy, love, acceptance, forgiveness...oh we could go on and on, because He loves us so much! All of it gives us great hope on a daily basis.
I remember a wonderful widow in my church, years ago, who would always remind me of the pending "fresh start" in her life in May. Her name was Ruth and she was vitally active in our church. She blessed my life as my secretary, as she did everyone with whom she made contact. Nobody prayed more fervently, was as constant in their attendance, or gave more freely than Ruth. She was a 20th century version of one of the greatest widows we find in the Bible! Her name was Anna (Luke 2:36-38).
We may remember the times, as kids, when we developed the art of door-to-door Trick or Treat and sharing this experience with our grandkids or even great grandkids! The smiles that lit up the faces of the little ones were and always will be such a joy to see.
But, September is also a very warm month...usually HOT! As I was thinking about this one morning in my prayer time, it reminded me that even as "ones who have been younger longer", we may have times of spiritual dryness that come into our lives. Walking with the Savior for many years does not negate the possibilities of those dry times. You know, times in which we experience trials and perhaps difficulties that stretch us out emotionally, physically and especially spiritually.
They have rightly been called "the Great Generation". They fought to preserve our freedom and were equipped with the character and selfless spirit that it took to save the world. Who were these people? They were youngsters that came from every state in the union. They came from all walks of life; sons and daughters of teachers, farmers, lawyers, businessman and more. Most had never been outside their immediate families and yet they stepped up and volunteered by the thousands! What were they made of in character and fortitude?
