The Power of Thoughts

“What were you thinking?” the mother said to her little toddler who was standing, most bewildered, with scissors in her hand. The child thought she did a rather nice job of cutting a chunk of hair out of her little friend’s head!

We are not always sure what is going to come from the mind of a little child.  However, as grown-ups, do we stop to think what we are thinking?  We should.  Every word, action, habit and attitude starts with a thought.  The Scripture tells us “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

Wikipedia’s definition of thoughts sounds like it comes straight from the Bible:

  • A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.

  • Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves, they therefore remain bound.

  • Every action and feeling is preceded by a thought.

  • Right thinking begins with the words we say to ourselves.

  • Circumstance does not make the man, it reveals him to himself.

According to research, our thoughts are powerful and fall into two categories called Faith Thoughts or Fear Thoughts. Our thoughts are either positive and healthy or they are negative, destructive, and toxic.

Faith Thoughts: Healthy, God-honoring thoughts produce healthy chemicals that flow through our bodies, giving life.

Fear Thoughts: Negative thoughts bring an abundance of toxic chemicals that pour out from our brain into every part of our body, bringing destruction and health problems. According to research, 87% - 95% of all illnesses are from the thought life!

Damaging emotions include:  fear, anger, resentment, unforgiving, worry, inferiority, hopelessness, rejection abandonment, anxiety, humiliation and so much more.  Doubting God and His Word can bring about defeat, discouragement, depression, and distractions.

The marvelous Word of God tells us: “He will keep us in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him“(Isaiah 26:3). The “How” to receive freedom from toxic thinking comes through a vital relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9&10) and trusting in His Word.  “For God hath not given spirit of fear but power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7.

I can tell you, with full assurance, that God loves you and you are in His thoughts.  It is our choice, we choose what we think, and we choose to be what we are!

May the Lord’s richest blessings be yours,

Jan
