It’s the most important thing that you can do for anybody. The Apostle Paul definitely knew how vital this was because he put it all his letters. I know this spiritual family application will translate into the physical family dynamic.
Let’s look at his epistle to the Colossians. In Paul’s introduction he assures his readers that “…we pray for you” (1:3). If you’re a parent reading this I hope you can truthfully say this to your children; if not, then it’s never too late to start. If you’re a grandparent reading this then I hope you can honestly say this to both your children and your grandchildren.
Intercessory prayer carries a great deal of power to the throne room of God. I don’t understand exactly how it works; I mean God has everything worked out in His timetable. But, we are told to bring our concerns to God on a regular basis, see Luke 18:1-8. John 17 is an entire chapter where Jesus is praying, mostly for His disciples and those of us who have come after them. So, don’t tell me that this isn’t important.
And if your heart is so broken by the lifestyle of your offspring that you don’t know quite what to pray, Romans 8:26-27 is for you. It says that “the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” That proves how serious God is about our concerns. He knows how desperate our pleas can get, because they are His children, too.
So don’t get discouraged by the situation you find yourself in. Remember that God is on your side to the point that His Spirit is groaning for you to Him. That sounds like a God I want on my side, and He will be if you simply ask Him to be. He knows you can’t do this on your own, that’s why He calls us to pray.
Paul politely requests that the Colossians return the favor in 4:3 as he says “And pray for us, too,” so, for any children reading this, you are also called to pray for your parents. They have one of the toughest assignments on the face of the Earth; namely, training you to become good citizens of this planet and Heaven. Satan will do everything in his power to try to stop them from succeeding, that’s why your parents need you to pray for them, too.
How often we need to pray is spelled out in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “pray continually;” sounds like we have our work cut out for us. So, let’s get to it!
