Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14
Can kids be evangelists? Yes! They are actually often times better at it than adults!
With the exception of my 5 year old, that did lead our dog to Christ, each of my older children have led someone to Christ. Typically their first attempt was on a sibling (or like my 5 year old, a pet). When my now 11 year old daughter was about 6, she led my son in a full sermon and prayer of salvation (he was only 3!) But it’s great practice! As they grew, they moved onto a close friend or relative. And, it’s ok for parents to help!
Though he laid the groundwork, my oldest once recruited me to assist in his efforts to reach a friend! My son had invited his friend to a youth event at church; we were in the car driving him home when my son started the conversation and his friend acknowledged his desire to accept Christ. I led him in a prayer of salvation right there in the car- it’s that easy! Meanwhile, my other children have done it as simply as telling a friend how to just “pray and ask Jesus in your heart,” as they’d suggest. It doesn’t have to be complicated!
Children are typically bolder than adults when it comes to talking about Jesus. They haven’t been tainted by the world to hide their faith or worry about being politically correct. In a lot of ways kids are actually the best evangelists!
Help your children become the best Gospel Gossips by:
1) Educating them. Provide them with basic education about what the Bible says about Jesus, Sin, and Eternity.
Jesus – John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Sin –Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Salvation/ Eternity – Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
2) Equipping them. Provide tools and prayer basics.
Tools such as colored bead bracelets or small “wordless” books or cubes can help break the ice. Often times these tools will contain 5 colors to represent Heaven and God's love, the darkness of sin, the blood of Christ, a clean heart, and Christian growth. You can find many of these items at a Christian retail store or through ministries such as Evan Tell, CEF, or E3.
Prayer of Salvation. Keep it simple, but equip your child with a basic prayer in case his or her friend would like to accept Christ as their Savior. Maybe teach them something like this: “Dear God, I’m a sinner in need of a Savior. I believe that you died on the cross for my sins and rose again. I give my life to you and ask you to come into my heart. Amen”
3) Empowering them. Remind your children that they too can bring someone to Christ! They are equally as able to lead a friend in a prayer of salvation as an adult. Remind them that children are the most receptive to the ideas of the Bible. Also, be willing to talk with your child’s friend or their parents. It’s important for you and your child to help friends find a place to attend church and grow further in their faith.
85% of Christians will make a decision for Christ between the ages of 4 and 14! The time is NOW to reach children for Christ and the way is through other children!
