A few insightful, yet funny, quotes and tales I enjoy on humility:
Humility is like underwear, we should have it on but not let it show.
A flea is riding on an elephant, after crossing an old bridge, the flea says, “Did you notice how we shook that bridge?”
Peter Marshall once said, “Lord, when we are wrong, make us willing to change. When we are right, make us easy to live with.”
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
“Humility is not denying the power you have, it is realizing that the power comes through you, not from you.” -Fred Smith
Now I tend to be a big-picture thinker, which leads to grandiose ideas. This is not a bad thing for the right situation, however, to be grandiose in everything takes its toll. Because of pride, I used to think that when God and I talked He was going to tell me to do something BIG, until I read Matthew 11:28 again.
In reading Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This time I noticed the comma after “Come to me.” A comma signifies a “pause”. What God means is just that, “come to me!” He strategically placed a “pause” after this statement so that we would stop and think and fully take in the command – “come to me!”
Not come to me when… you are weary and burdened, or you are sick, or in your deepest need and darkest hour, but always, for everything, all the time!
I will admit, this invitation steps on my pride. This would mean that I have to be humbled enough to go to Him for EVERYTHING. However, that is exactly what He is commanding. Maybe we should read those punctuations out loud, “Come to me (and pause)”.
What is keeping you from going to Him? Do we not trust God enough? Is it a matter of showing our weakness if we go to Him for ALL our needs? Whatever stronghold it may be, it is the very thing that God can release you from, if you will do as He commands:
“Come to Me.”
