When you're leading, is anyone following?

There is a famous proverb that says “If you are leading and no one is following, you are just taking a walk”.  

In 2008, the Lord put on our hearts to create a leadership award for women called The Shining Star Award based on Daniel 12:3: “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.“ This award is given out annually, recognizing a woman for her investment in the lives of others.  Women who are truly leading for Kingdom impact - not just getting a little fresh air!

This year we are honoring Debbie Stuart, Women’s Ministry Director at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. Debbie, who happens to be one of my personal heroes, will receive this award at our Reach for the Stars reception, July 28, 2011 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Richardson.  Her dynamic teaching style and undying passion to see women understand and live Biblical principles have led thousands to transformation and fulfillment. Even through personal struggles, beyond what many of us have faced, Debbie continues to “shine on” and be a light for others to follow.

Past recipients of The Shining Star Award have been Vickie Kraft, Sheila Bailey, and June Hunt – all who are excellent leaders and have challenged me over the years to do what 2 Timothy 2:2 says “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

If you are someone who leads (or would like to), take a look behind you.  Is there anyone there? If not, here are a few simple things to know that will start you down the right road:

• People want to follow those they feel connected to, so spend more time getting to know them.

• People want to follow those who are transparent, so share more of your life even if it isn’t flattering.

• People want to follow those who make them feel needed, so let go of more and let others help even if you can do it better yourself.
